JONATHAN ANNOUNCE BAMANGA TUKUR RESIGNATION
By Saharareporters, New York
President Goodluck Jonathan finally presented the resignation letter of embattled party chieftain, Bamanga Tukur, to the 63rd meeting of the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party's secretariat in Abuja today.
The president took the unusual step of reading Mr. Tukur's resignation letter to members after pulling it out of an envelope.
He praised Tukur, who was also present at the meeting, and said that he had not committed any crime to warrant his forced resignation promising to give him a bigger assignment.
Saharareporters sources stated that the President hopes to make Mr. Tukur Nigeria’s ambassador to China in coming days.
Saharareporters had revealed last night that Mr. Tukur's resignation will be made public today at the NEC meeting after he was barred from a crucial caucus meeting at the Aso Rock Villa yesterday.
A new chairman of the party will emerge next week Monday according to President Jonathan.

MATIC SIGNS
Chelsea Football Club have today
completed the signing of Nemanja Matic
from Benfica.
On signing his five-and-a-half-year
contract, the 25-year-old said: 'I am very
happy for this opportunity to be back at
this club. I feel very good because of that
and just want to say I will give my best to
help the team and make the Chelsea fans
happy.
' Jose Mourinho added: 'I am very
pleased that Nemanja is returning to
Chelsea. He has grown as a player in
Portugal and has become a fantastic all-
round midfielder. I am sure he will
become a very important member of the
squad and help us to achieve our
ambitions.'
The Serbian midfielder, who will wear the
number 21 shirt, returns for a second
spell at Stamford Bridge, having
previously represented the Blues after
joining from MSK Kosice in 2009.
He
made three substitute appearances in the
2009/10 season and departed in January
2011 as part of the deal which brought
David Luiz , one of the most coveted
players in Europe, from Benfica to
London.
Matic made his Chelsea debut
aged 21 during a 4-0 league victory
against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and
also featured in our final-day 8-0 win
over Wigan Athletic in 2010 which saw us
clinch the title.
In August 2010, he went on a season-
long loan to Vitesse Arnhem to gain more
first-team experience and although the
transfer to Benfica was agreed mid-
season, Vitesse retained his services for
the remainder of that campaign.
The 6ft
4in, left-footed player made his debut for
the Portuguese club as a late substitute in
a 2-1 win over Vitoria Guimaraes at the
start of the 2011/12 campaign, and with
the benefit of regular first-team
appearances, his game matured.
Composed, comfortable in possession
and with a good range of passing, he
scored his first goal for the Lisbon club
during a 4-1 win against Vitoria Setubal
in January 2012, and acquired valuable
Champions League experience, including
games against Chelsea in both legs of the
quarter-final on our way to winning the
competition.
While his first season at the
club was a solid one, the 2012/13
campaign saw Matic flourish. With Javi
Garcia departing for Manchester City, he
became a formidable presence in the
centre of midfield, impressing to such an
extent he was named Portuguese Player
of the Month on three occasions.
He also added more goals to his game
and a stunning volley in a 2-2 draw
against Porto was this week voted second
in FIFA's Puskas Award for the best goal
scored anywhere in the world in 2013.
He
also netted the winner as Benfica beat
Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of
their round of 32 Europa League clash.
Matic played in all but one of Benfica's
matches as they progressed to last
season's Europa League final, where they
were beaten by Chelsea in Amsterdam.
They were also pipped to the Portuguese
title by Porto, with a solitary point
separating the two big rivals, but on a
personal note, the season ended in a
memorable manner for the Serbian when
he was named Primeira Liga Player of the
Year.
The opportunity to play regularly for
one of Europe's biggest teams has
undoubtedly aided Matic's development
over the last two seasons, and he
continued to impress during the first half
of the current campaign in Portugal where
Benfica currently have a two-point lead at
the top of the table.
His final appearance for Benfica came
last Sunday, when he helped them to a
2-0 win over Porto.
Matic has earned international recognition
with Serbia at youth and Under-21 level,
and with the senior team for whom he
has made nine appearances, the most
recent a World Cup qualifier in October.
WORDS WITH, MIKEL JOHN OBI
Earlier this month, in our 2-0 win at Derby County,John Mikel Obiplayed his 300thgame for Chelsea, becoming only our fourth foreign player to reach that considerable landmark.
By the game's conclusion, he had a goal, the captain's armband, and a place in the next round of the FA Cup. He speaks to the official Chelsea website about his time at the club so far, and his desire to keep winning trophies in the years to come…Actions speak louder than words, so the saying goes. However, an analysis of John Mikel Obi's 300 Chelsea appearances is perhaps best illustrated by those who have worked closest with him during that time - his managers, team-mates and coaches.
They have overseen his progress from the highly talented 18-year-old that arrived in west London in the summer of 2006, to the strong, tactically astute defensive midfielder whose best performances have often come when it's mattered most.
According to José Mourinho,Mikel is 'a genius in his position', to the extent it is 'a miracle if he loses the ball'. The Portuguese, who signed the Nigerian seven-and-a-half years ago and is now managing him again, is not alone when it comes to those who have sung Mikel's praises since he moved to west London.
Luiz Felipe Scolari said 'he belongs in the position'. Carlo Ancelotti likened Mikel's style to his own, a compliment not to be taken lightly considering the Italian's own glittering playing career. Ray Wilkins, a lieutenant of both Ancelotti's and Guus Hiddink's before that, and an exceptional former midfielder himself, hailed Mikel as a player who 'reads the game exceptionally well, is as strong as an ox and has a lovely range of passing'.
Andre Villas-Boas admired his 'amazing mental toughness' when he played on despite the abduction of his father in Nigeria, and, following our epic run to the Champions League final in 2012,Roberto Di Matteo stressed the significance of the 'vital' role he played throughout the latter stages of that glorious European campaign, highlighting disciplined defensive performances against Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Considering these endorsements, it is little surprise Mikel has reached 300 games in Chelsea blue, averaging almost exactly 40 appearances a season.
Yet the rough diamond that signed in 2006 joined a midfield that already contained Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele and Michael Essien, arguably the most fearsome in world football at that time, especially with Michael Ballack joining too.
Asked to cast his mind back to those early days at the club,Mikelsays it was a daunting but invaluable experience.'Coming into a big club like Chelsea, as a young 18-year-old from Africa, it was a dream come true,' he reflects.'I remember coming into the dressing room and I was shaking all through the first week.
The players in there really helped me settle in -John Terry,Frank Lampard,Didier Drogba and the other African players that were there at the time.'I looked at these guys every day and I learned a lot from them, how they act on and off the football pitch, which helped me develop and mature as a person. It was a growing up stage which I never had with any other team.
I just jumped straight into this team so I had to learn that way.'Mikel's learning curve was occasionally stunted by disciplinary problems, on and off the pitch, including four red cards in his first 18 months at the club. Looking back, he concedes he was at times 'naïve and stupid', but, as he puts it, 'it's all about growing up in the game, and I think over the years I've done that'.
The evidence supports him, too - his last sending off was over six years ago, and for a man deployed in a highly competitive area of the pitch, he gets relatively few yellow cards now.
As the discussion turns to his style of play, the subject of Makelele comes up. The Frenchman was so imperious in that defensive midfield role he subsequently had the position named after him. No easy act to follow, then.'I learned a lot from Maka, he was always helpful,'Mikel points out. 'I watched him play a lot because I knew that was the position Jose wanted me to play in.
Everyone has their own style of play and I do play a bit differently to him because I know I can contribute more offensively, but at the same time I try to keep the shape of the team which is important.'Of course I want to score but at the same time not all 11 players can score, you have people there to keep the shape of the team. If I'm playing with Frank he is always going forward.
If both of us go it's a disaster, likewise with Rami, he's a box-to-box player. I have to make sure I sit, and if we keep a clean sheet and we win then I'm very happy.'Lampard, so often fielded next to Mikel over the years, in either a three-man or a two-man central Chelsea midfield, is well-placed to judge the Nigerian's assets.'It's very good playing alongside Obi,' he tells the official Chelsea website.
'He's a top holding midfield player, and for me personally being more attacking in my game it helps to play with someone who has discipline and moves the ball quickly, which Obi can do.'He's one of those players that will not make headlines, but he's happy to go unrecognised in his work and he has a huge worth for the team when he plays.
'That worth has helped us to domestic and European triumphs in recent years.Mikelcites our Double-winning campaign under Ancelotti as perhaps his most memorable season so far, but asked to pick his best performance for Chelsea, it is 'without a shadow of a doubt' the one he produced in Munich, the night of our greatest ever triumph.
'Sometimes when you come into big gameslike that you need players to step up, and I think the whole team did. Everyone played very well. It was a great team performance,we knew how tough it was going to be playing in their stadium but we defended well and when we had to play we did that as well.'Munich has topped up my Chelsea career, because that trophy was the one the club have always wanted to win, and doing it was brilliant. It was the special one.'And so, on FA Cup third round duty at Derby,Mikel walked onto the pitch for the 300thtime as a Chelsea player, joining PetrCech,Didier Drogba and Gianfranco Zola as our foreign players to reach that milestone.
Following the 2-0 win, which included Mikel's first headed goal for the club, the players went to applaud the travelling Chelsea supporters.
It was Mikel's name that rang around the iPro Stadium, recognition not just for his goal on the day but for the great service he has given the club.'I have always appreciated the Chelsea fans, they've been amazing.
They're always there to support the team week in, week out, which just shows how brilliant they are,'Mikel stresses, before finishing our interview with a summary of his time at Stamford Bridge past, present and future.'It's been an amazing journey.
I've enjoyed every bit of it,' he smiles. 'I've worked with some great people, great players from when I came to the ones that are here now. They've all been brilliant.'I've won a lot of trophies with this team, but I'm still hungry to keep winning more. I'm very happy, I enjoy what I do, coming to the training ground every day, spending time with my team-mates. I hope there are many more years to come.'Taking into account the opinions of so many who have watched him, played with him and managed him since he joined Chelsea, he is surely not alone in that desire.

Ronaldo must now be considered an all-time great after second Ballon d'Or win
The Portuguese superstar is only the
10th player to become a multiple
winner of football’s most prestigious
individual prize, and his place in
history is now secure.
Lionel Messi, Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini,
Marco van Basten, Alfredo Di Stefano,
Franz Beckenbauer, Kevin Keegan, the
Brazilian Ronaldo, Karl-Heinz
Rummenigge – these luminaries all share
one thing in common: they collected the
Ballon d’Or on more than one occasion.
Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s crowning
as the 2013 Fifa Ballon d’Or winner in
Zurich on Monday, the Real Madrid
lynchpin has now joined this special club
and in the process earned himself a
reputation as a legend of the sport.
The
attacker probably recognised this himself
as he broke down in tears upon collecting
the prize.
To win the Ballon d’Or once – as 33
individuals have managed, starting with
Stanley Matthews in the inaugural edition
in 1956 right up until Kaka in 2007 - is
certainly a magnificent achievement, but
it doesn’t necessarily catapult a footballer
to all-time greatness.
After all, neither
1986 victor Igor Belanov – a flash in the
pan with Dynamo Kiev and the Soviet
Union – nor England’s 2001 champion
Michael Owen can be considered among
the best the game has had to offer.
To claim the Ballon d’Or twice or more is
to maintain frequent levels of brilliance at
the very highest level, something that
Ronaldo achieved not only in 2013 but
consistently over a number of seasons.
Until a few years ago, Ronaldo was a
player who split opinion. In some
quarters, he was considered a flat-track
bully; a forward who would crush lesser
opponents but would often come up short
on the biggest stage and against the best
opponents. Until 2011, this was a view
even held by this writer.
Ronaldo had under-performed in the key
matches at successive World Cups and at
Euro 2008, and his knock-out record in
the Champions League – barring a final
goal against Chelsea that was followed by
a near-fatal penalty miss – was not good
enough.
Today, one month short of his 29th
birthday, there can be no doubts about
Ronaldo’s pedigree. When it comes to the
big occasion, there is no one you would
rather have in your team than the
Portuguese.
In 2013, Ronaldo scored in
every Champions League knockout round
he played in – including decisive strikes
home and away in the last 16 victory over
former club Manchester United. He
outshone his great rival Messi in the
Clasico marathon, memorably hitting a
double in a 3-1 Copa del Rey semi-final
triumph at Camp Nou and bagging six in
as many Clasicos over the course of the
season.
And, with Portugal’s World Cup
qualification on the line in a November
playoff against Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s
Sweden, Ronaldo struck four times over
two legs to single-handedly take his
nation to Brazil.
To stand the test of time,
you have to deliver when it really matters
and Ronaldo has now proven himself in
this regard - certainly on the club scene.
His goalscoring statistics since his
ultimate breakthrough season with
Manchester United in 2006-07 are truly
astonishing; 321 club goals in 378
appearances at a rate of more than one a
game after joining Real Madrid four-and-
a-half years ago.
In 2013, Ronaldo
scored 69 goals in 59 games in all
competitions for club and country.
It is true that the Ballon d’Or may have
lost a degree of credibility since Fifa’s
takeover.
Wesley Sneijder’s omission in
2010, Jose Mourinho’s rigging claims, the
extension of this edition's voting deadline,
and the very public spat between Sepp
Blatter and Ronaldo have been harmful.
It
must also be recognised that we are
living in an era where due to changes in
the game and a paucity of top class
defenders and defences, it is easier for
attackers like Ronaldo to break record
after record.
But none of this changes the
fact that the forward will go down in
history as a footballing legend.
What is even more impressive is that, just
like his former manager Mourinho,
Ronaldo has confirmed his brilliance in
more than one environment – having
starred in two major European leagues.
He has demonstrated his ability to change
his skin and adapt to different styles,
systems, coaches, competitions and
cultures.
“He is the best. The best in the world.
Probably the best ever," Mourinho said of
his countryman ahead of the Champions
League return at Old Trafford last March.
'The Special One' was likely exaggerating
as he attempted to win the battle of the
mind games with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ronaldo is not at the level of a Diego
Maradona or Pele, a Zinedine Zidane or
Platini, a Cruyff or Beckenbauer - players
who took their club heroics to major
international tournaments.
But Ronaldo
still has a chance to close the gap in
Brazil this summer.
After claiming the Ballon d’Or for a
second time, all that Ronaldo is missing
to complete his career jigsaw is to be the
star of a World Cup.
Ronaldo Beats Messi to Ballon d'o
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich to win the 2013 Fifa Ballon d'Or.
The Portugal captain, 28, was named as the world player of the year for the first time since 2008 by national coaches, captains and journalists.Germany goalkeeperNadine Angererwon the women's world player of the year.
Former Bayern Munich coachJupp Heynckespicked up the coach of the year accolade.
Ronaldo claimed the award with a total of 1,365 points, ahead of Messi (1,205) and Ribery (1,127), with the votes cast by 184 coaches, 184 national captains and 173 members of the global media.
Messi, 26, had won the award for thelast four years, however Ronaldo had been viewed as the front-runner this time after scoring 66 goals in 56 games in 2013 for club and country. They included a sensational hat-trick for Portugal against Sweden in their World Cup qualifying play-off second leg, which sealed a place in the finals in Brazil."First of all, I have to say a great thanks to all of my team-mates with the club and the national team," Ronaldo said as he cried during his speech.
"Without all of their efforts this would not have been possible. I am very happy, it is very difficult to win this award.
"Everybody that has been involved with me on a personal level, I have to thank. My wife, my friends, my son. It is a tremendously emotional moment.
All I can say isthank you to everybody that has been involved."Women's player of the year Angerer, 35, saved two penalties inGermany's 1-0 win over Norway inthe 2013 European Championship final and was named player of the match.
"I have to say that I'm a little surprised, but very thankful," the Brisbane Roar goalkeeper said."You never get a success like this on your own.
I have to thank my team-mates and my goalkeeping coach who raised me to a level that I never thought I'd get to.
"German national manager Silvia Neidwon the women's coach award, while Heynckes, who retired at the end of the last season after guiding Bayern Munich toa historic treble, said:"Maybe 10 years ago, I wouldn't even have dreamt of this. I am humbled and happy to be standinghere.
"The Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur was awarded to Brazil legend and three-time World Cup winnerPele.
"I promised to my family that I would not cry but I am emotional," he said."I got so many trophies and prizes but I was jealous of all of those guys who got the Ballon d'Or, which I couldn't get because I didn't play in Europe. Now I thank God that I can complete my trophies at home.
"The Puskas Award for goal of the year went toZlatan Ibrahimovicfor his 30-yard overhead strike for Sweden, his fourth goal of the game, against England in November 2012.Former president of the International Olympic CommitteeJacques Roggewon the Fifa presidential award, while theAfghanistan Football Federationwon the fair play accolade for the strides they have made advancing the game in the war-torn country. It emerged afterwards that neither Ronaldo or Messivoted for the other in their top three.
The Portuguese selected Radamel Falcao for first place, followed by Gareth Bale and Mesut Ozil, while the the Argentine opted for Barcelona team-mates Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Neymar.England manager Roy Hodgson chose Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic and Robin van Persie as his top three, while captain Steven Gerrard picked Ronaldo, Messi and Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez.

Jonathan Tells Decamped Politician Safe Trip
Jonathan to decampees: Please decamp
well
*Says his ambition is not worth the blood
of any Nigerian
President Goodluck Jonathan has advised
those interested in defecting to other
political parties to ahead, wishing safe
trip to their new political abode as he
asked them to decamp well.
The President also urged elderly
politicians in the country to promote
peace and unity through their utterances.
He gave the advice on Sunday while
speaking at the Armed Forces
Remembrance Day Service at the National
Christian Centre, Abuja.
Although he did not mention the name of
the elderly politicians,he said that senior
citizens in the age bracket of 70 or 80yrs
who have seen it all and ought to know
that the unity of Nigeria is more important
than any individual interest have
encouraged youth to hate and carry arms
to kill others.
Stressing that his ambition doesn’t worth
bloodshed of any Nigerian, the President
also advised those decamping to decamp
well or those camping to camp well.
He said: “We are also to emulate them.
Those who have paid supreme sacrifice to
keep out nation together, those of us who
are alive especially leaders today should
think of what we can do to honour them is
to know that whatever we say, whatever
song we sing, it should be a song that will
bring honour to them and peace to this
country.”
“Sometimes I get worried when I listen to
provocative statements that come from
very senior citizens. People that ordinarily
you perceive are very senior citizens.
People who are probably 70 or 80 years
who have seen it all who ordinarily
should know the unity of this country is
more important than the interest any
individual.
Sometimes they preach hate and even
encourage young people to carry arms
and kill themselves.”
Speaking on his ambition, he said: “I have
always said it that any ambition I have at
any time is not worth the blood of any
Nigerian. I will never ever expect a
Nigerian to spill a drop of his blood
because Goodluck Jonathan must fulfil
his ambition.”
“I pray that all politicians should know
that there will be no nation if we kill
ourselves, just like the Archbishop said if
you want people to come out and vote
why do you threaten them. If you threaten
them people will stay in their houses and
how do you intend to win election? Is it by
manipulating the figures and declare
yourself a winner?” He queried
Jonathan continued: “So in an occasion
when we are remembering those people
that have kept this country one for us to
be celebrating our centenary we should
admonish ourselves the key actors today,
we should preach peace, we should
preach unity.”
“If all of us collectively talk about the
unity and peace of this country then of
course all our economic, security
problems will be resolved and the country
will move in the direction we want it to.”
“For the guest speaker we thank God for
your message, the admonition when he
was talking about those who want to
camp should camp well and those who
want to decamp should decamp well.”
“Pray for us to always remember our
fathers because we are in a political
environment and politicians always have
ambitions, we really appreciate your
prayers.” He said
He thanked the churches for their prayers
noting that the challenges facing the
country within the global trend could have
been worse than what it is today.
“Nigeria would have been two or more
nations by now. But they worked for it,
some died in the process, some died
serving the world outside . These are the
people we are remembering today.” He
stated
The President had earlier read the second
Bible reading from Ephesians Chapter 6,
verses 10 to 19a.
Delivering his sermon before the President
spoke, the Archbishop of Methodist
Church of Nigeria, Abuja, Archbishop Job
Oche advised politicians ahead of the
2015 elections to stop threatening
Nigerians with their utterances as they
will not come out to vote if they feel
threatened.
He said: “May I advise all politicians here
to give us peace of mind. People have
started to fear how 2015 will look like. If
you need our votes, don’t threaten us.
Begin to preach peace that will make us to
come out and vote.”
“Leave 2015 alone, God knows what to do
with 2015. Leave the problems of
tomorrow for tomorrow. Stop destroying
one another because of ambition.
According to him, the church has little to
say on the camping and decamping by
politicians stressing that ministers are
also involved in decamping as some of
them leave their churches after few
months to set up their churches.
He said: “On camping and decamping,
the church has no answer to that because
the church is also involved in camping
and decamping. If after three or six
months, a minister builds his own church,
is that not decamping?”
Noting that all rebellion can not stand the
test of time, he said: “whether you camp
or decamp, the Most High God will speak.
Ambition knows no father.”
Taking the congregation through Hebrews
chapter 11 from verse 13, 2nd Timothy 4:
7, he urged Nigerians to do everything
possible to keep Nigeria one so that the
labour of past heroes will not be in vain.
To keep Nigeria one, he urged them to
contribute their quota instead of
criticising the leaders.
Calling on Nigerians to see the ongoing
developments in the power sector,
transportation, reducing unemployment
rate and fight against corruption, he
urged politicians to stop recruiting thugs
and hired assassins in order to create a
special place for themselves in politics.
Also urging Nigerians to rebuke those
who are power drunk, he pleaded with
politicians to stop utterances that are
capable of weakening the leaders, just as
he advised Nigerians to perpetually love
one another instead of hatred for other
tribes or religion.
He prayed that the peace of God will
continue to prevail in Nigeria as the 2015
elections approaches.
Some men of God at the service were also
given opportunity to pray for wisdom and
protection of the President and his family
and the nation.
Jonathan Phones Obasanjo, Begs To Reconsider Decision
President Goodluck Jonathan has
telephoned former President Olusegun
Obasanjo to deny responsibility for
promoting a controversial member of
his
Peoples Democratic Party, Buruji
Kashamu, as an influential party
leader in
the south-west geo-political zone, a
development that has infuriated Mr.
Obasanjo, sources close to the former
president said Saturday.
Mr. Obasanjo was travelling in Addis
Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, at the
time
of the conversation with Mr. Jonathan,
those familiar with the matter said.
Usually reliable presidency sources
said
Mr. Jonathan hurriedly called Mr.
Obasanjo on Thursday shortly after he
received the former president’s latest
letter informing him and the PDP
National
Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, that he
was
suspending participation in party
activities for as long as the ruling
party
continued to treat Mr. Kashamu,
believed
to be a fugitive, with reverence.
Our sources said during the telephone
exchanges, Mr. Jonathan appealed to
Mr.
Obasanjo to reconsider his decision to
suspend himself from the party, saying
he
would personally prevail on Mr. Tukur
to
stop fraternizing with Mr. Kashamu
and
imposing him on the South-West PDP
as
a rallying point.
The president, according to our
sources,
told Mr. Obasanjo that he had never
met
Mr. Kashamu and had never instructed
anyone to accord the controversial
Ogun
politician a special or preferential
treatment in the party.
“Baba, believe me, I don’t know
Kashamu,” our sources quoted Mr.
Jonathan as saying. “I think it is the
chairman (Tukur) that knows him.
Personally, I have nothing with him.
But I
will ask chairman.
“Kindly consider your decision again.
The
PDP belongs to us all and we need to
correct whatever is wrong together.”
The president then promised to “hear
from” Mr Tukur, and to “do
something”
about the matter, those informed
about
the discussion said.
In his response, Mr. Obasanjo is said
to
have explained to the president his
frustration at explaining to world
leaders
how an alleged criminal, wanted by
the
United States authorities, ended up as
a
leader of Nigeria’s ruling party.
He reportedly told the president that
his
assurance of action might amount to
nothing as he believed not much could
be
done as of now.
The Special Adviser to the President on
Media, Reuben Abati could not be
reached
to comment for this story. Several
telephone calls to him failed to
connect.
But three separate presidential aides,
who
do no want to be named for fear they
might be sanctioned, however
confirmed
details of the conversation between Mr.
Jonathan and Mr. Obasanjo.
Contacted, Mr. Obasanjo’s
spokesperson,
Tunde Oladunjoye, said he had no
permission from his boss to confirm
details of his conversation with
anyone.
An aide of the former president
however
confirmed the exchanges.
Ex-President Obasanjo’s letter to PDP
Chairman Bamanga Tukur
Mr. Obasanjo had in a January 7 letter
to
Mr. Tukur announced that he was
withdrawing from the activities of the
PDP
for as long as Mr. Kashamu, whom he
accuses of being a “wanted habitual
criminal”, remains a leader of the
party in
the south west, the former president’s
geopolitical zone.
In a letter to Mr. Tukur on Tuesday, Mr.
Obasanjo said he would remain a
“card-
carrying member” of the governing
party,
but will no longer participate in the
party’s functions at all levels.
“Politics played by any national
political
party must have morality, decency,
discipline, principles and leadership
examples as cardinal practices of the
party,” the former president’s letter,
published on Saturday, read. “I have
attached here recent documents that
clearly indicates that you extolled PDP
zonal leader in the South West of
Nigeria
and an indigene of Ogun State, who is,
to
say the least, not a credit to the party
as
a member let alone being a zonal
leader.”
Mr. Obasanjo, a native of Ogun State,
as
Mr. Kashamu, said while he believed
that
a truly national political party should,
as
a microcosm of a nation, bear all
forms
of characters as members, he however
found no justification in extolling a
“known criminal” wanted abroad on
drug-related charges.
“Since I stick in my practice of party
politics to the hallowed and cherished
principles enunciated above, I take this
opportunity to let you know that while I
continue to remain a card-carrying
member of PDP, I cannot and I will not
subscribe to a wanted habitual
criminal
being installed as my zonal leader in
the
party; a criminal for whom extradition
has been requested by the US
government,” Mr. Obasanjo said.
Mr. Kashamu dismissed Mr.
Obasanjo’s
letter as a “cocktail of lies” and a
“campaign of calumny” inspired by the
former president’s loss of political
relevance in the Southwest.
“Let me state from the outset that
contrary to Obasanjo’s claim, I am not
the
leader of the party in the South West,”
he
said in a statement on Saturday. “I am
just one of the party’s foot soldiers in
the
zone and it is in that capacity that I
am
made the chairman of the Organisation
and Mobilisation Committee for the
party
in the zone.”
Mr. Kashamu said it was
“preposterous”
to be referred to as the leader of the
party
in a zone that parades Bode George,
Shuaibu Oyedokun, Lekan Balogun,
Iyiola
Omisore, Teslim Folarin, Yekeen
Adeojo,
Clement Awoyelu, Ayodele Fayose,
Bode
Olajumoke.
He denied being wanted in the US.
Officials close to President Jonathan
and
Mr. Obasanjo said the president
contacted
the former leader by phone after being
informed of Mr. Obasanjo’s letter to the
PDP chairman. He denied
responsibility
for Mr. Kashamu’s appointment, a
decision he blamed on Mr. Tukur, who
has been at the centre of the PDP’s
months of intractable internal crisis.
Coming about a month after Mr.
Obasanjo penned a scathing letter
accusing Mr. Jonathan of being inept
and
corrupt –allegations the president
rejected in his reply-, the telephone
communication over Mr. Kashamu
appears partly a fence-mending move
by
the two leaders as their party’s
troubles
escalate in the face of credible threat
from
the opposition All Progressives
Congress,
APC.
PDP Still Needs You, Tukur Tells Obasanjo
The PDP National Chairman, Alhaji
Bamanga Tukur, on Saturday said
former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s
fatherly aura and experience in politics
were still required by the party.
Tukur said this in reaction to a letter
written to him and President Goodluck
Jonathan, dated Jan. 7, 2014, by
Obasanjo.
Obasanjo had, in the letter, raised
some issues related to the PDP in the
country’s South-West geo-political
zone.
The letter had also conveyed
Obasanjo’s decision to withdraw from
participating in the party`s politics at
all levels.
“It is an honour that you deemed it fit
and proper to intimate me with an
issue important to your mind and our
party in the south-west zone.
“It is my wish and prayer that such
cordial and positive relationship will
continue,” Tukur said.
He stated that Obasanjo’s experiences
as one of the party`s founding fathers
were required in its drive to get
stronger and become more formidable.
Tukur said the PDP had more pressing
challenges, bordering most
importantly on the coming Ekiti and
Osun states’ governorship elections
and the 2015 general elections.
All this, he said, required strong inputs
from the former president.
The PDP national chairman said
continuous dialogue was needed for a
stronger partnership among the
party’s stakeholders.
He maintained that the need for PDP
to reclaim lost grounds in the south-
west required the full support of party
leaders like Obasanjo.
Tukur expressed gratitude to Obasanjo
for his manner of approach and for
presenting his grievances on issues in
the PDP south-west.
“I thank you for your gesture and I
pray that we shall all continue to
dialogue and partner, so he can move
our party forward,” he said.
Baba also said there was the need for
PDP to attain success in the
governorship elections coming up in
Ekiti and Osun and the subsequent
elections in 2015.
This, according to him, was critical to
reclaiming lost grounds in the South-
West zone of the country.
On issues raised by Obasonjo in the
letter on the state of PDP in the south-
west, Tukur said the crisis within the
PDP in the zone preceded his
emergence as the party`s national
chairman.
He insisted that the party’s National
Executive Committee and the National
Working Committee were never part of
the problems in the south-west PDP.
“We came in when we were threatened
with contempt of court charges for not
obeying the court’s order to dissolve
the south-west zonal executive and
remove some officers of the party.
“We complied with the court orders
because of our belief in the rule of law
and to avoid consequences of
disobeying such orders.’’ Tukur said.

Cech the clean sheet king
Petr Cech today set a new Chelsea
goalkeeping record for clean sheets.
With the team not conceding a goal in the
2-0 victory away against Hull City, it was
the 209 th time Cech had played in a
shut-out performance, beating the 208
clean sheets recorded by Peter Bonetti in
his long and distinguished Chelsea career
that spanned 1959 to 1979.
On breaking the record, Cech who joined
Chelsea in 2004 and made his 459 th
appearance today said:
'It is a great personal achievement, a
great milestone but I believe this number
can grow and hopefully it will help us win
another trophy.
'The most important thing today was to
get the three points but I was thinking in
the second half I still have the clean sheet
and in the end we had both the points
and the clean sheet.
'I am still young, I can keep playing and I
hope I will so I can add some more clean
sheets and we will see where the final
number will stop.'
It was also the 31-year-old's 150th clean
sheet in the Premier League measured by
their criteria*. The all-time record in that
competition is 169 by David James and
Jose Mourinho is backing his keeper to
beat that.
'Petr is almost 10 years playing at the top
and there has been clean sheet after
clean sheet,' said the Chelsea manager.
'At this moment he beats the record of Mr
Bonetti but I think probably next year he
will beat the record of the Premier
League.
'He becomes a historic figure in the
Premier League because all his career
has been here since 2004. Also playing
with Chelsea he has a lot of appearances
and the best stage for a goalkeeper I think
is between 30 and 35.'
Bonetti, who also worked as a goalkeeper
coach at Chelsea during the 1980s and
currently is a matchday host in one of the
hospitality areas at Stamford Bridge,
reacted to Cech's achievement with praise
for his successor.
' Petr Cech has been brilliant to do what
he's done, he's one of the best
goalkeepers I've seen. His record speaks
for itself.
'I admire him greatly, he's been
incredible, and still has a long time to go.
He is relatively young and could still go on
to break more and more records.
'Clean sheets were a little more rare back
in my day but that takes nothing away
from him, he's been brilliant. He's a
fantastic person.
When I first met him he
was a real gentleman. I went to wish him
well when he first joined and it was like
we knew each other from years back.
Whenever I see him he is always lovely,
very courteous and always eager to say
hello.
He's a very genuine person.'
Cech recently said he would invite Bonetti
for a drink when the record changed
hands and it is an invitation that will be
accepted.
'I'm looking forward to him buying that
drink when we cross paths, maybe at the
end of the season,' said Bonetti. 'I'm
looking forward to getting that cup of tea
once there's no work to worry about!'
Frank Lampard , who set a new
goalscoring record for Chelsea last
season and has shared so much success
with Cech and played in so many of those
clean-sheet games, joined in the plaudits
for his colleague.
'Pete has been one of the best
goalkeepers for many, many years,' said
the midfielder.
'He's unbelievable, particularly in the year
we won the Champions League, looking
back on the final and the games towards
the final and how much he saved us. I
don't think he got enough recognition for
it on a world scale.
'People talk about other goalies in Spain
and Italy, but nobody was in Pete's class
that year. At Chelsea obviously people
recognise him.
One of the downsides of
being as consistent as him is maybe
people do get used to you being that
good. We're very lucky to have him.'
Everyone at Chelsea Football Club
congratulates Petr on his huge
achievement.
*Chelsea FC awards a clean sheet to the
starting goalkeeper when the team does
not concede in the complete match. In the
event of an outfield player or (since 1992)
a substitute keeper replacing an injured or
sent-off keeper then they share the clean
sheet. Some other organisations' records
require the keeper to complete the match
before he is given a clean sheet.
Obasanjo withdraws from PDP
Obasanjo withdraws from PDP •Writes
Tukur, copies Jonathan •PDP govs give
conditions for peace.
President Olusegun Obasanjo has fired
another letter, this time, to the National
Chairman of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, in
which he gave a notice of his
withdrawal from the activities of the
party.
Obasanjo also sent a copy of the letter
to President Goodluck Jonathan as
National Leader of the party. A copy of
the letter was obtained by the Saturday
Tribune.
The former president, in the letter, said
he was withdrawing from all activities of
the party because the PDP had been
negating the principles of morality,
decency and discipline in its decisions,
especially as they affect the South West
where he comes from.
The letter, dated January 7, 2014,
according to a source at the national
secretariat of the party, was received in
the office of Tukur on Wednesday, 8
January, 2014. It is believed that
President Jonathan also got his own
copy on Thursday.
Obasanjo accused the party leadership
of imposing someone (names witheld),
who he described as a criminal wanted
abroad, on the party as its South West
zonal leader and proceeded to add that
he was forwarding with the letter,
“recent documents” on the alleged
activities of the person.
Efforts to get copies of the “recent
documents” by Saturday Tribune from
both the PDP national secretariat as
well as from Obasanjo’s side were,
however, not successful but a source at
PDP’s national secretariat confirmed
that the letter came with attachments.
He did not give further details.
The three paragraph letter reads:
“While I believe that a good and truly
national political party must be a
microcosm of the nation in its
membership, made up of all sorts of
characters from near-saints to near-
satan, I also believe that on no account
should a known habitual criminal that is
wanted abroad to face criminal charges
levelled against him be extolled as a
political leader in a respectable and
wholesome nation-building political
party.
“(...Names witheld) has been so extolled
in PDP in South-West geo-political zone
which I personally find unsavoury.
Politics played by any national political
party must have morality, decency,
discipline, principles and leadership
examples as cardinal practices of the
party. I have attached here recent
documents that clearly indicate that
your extolled PDP Zonal Leader in the
South-West zone of Nigeria and an
indigene of Ogun State is, to say the
least, not a credit to the party as a
member, let alone being a zonal leader.
“Since I stick in my practice of party
politics to the hallowed and cherished
principles enunciated above, I take this
opportunity to let you know that while I
continue to remain a card-carrying
member of PDP, I cannot and I will not
subscribe to a wanted habitual criminal
being installed as my zonal leader in the
party; a criminal for whom extradition
has been requested by the US
government. In the meantime, I will
consider withdrawing my activity with
PDP at local, state, zonal and national
levels until the anomalous and
shameful situation is corrected.”
A meeting of South West leaders of the
party, it was gathered, will hold in
Ibadan, Oyo State, today and may also
come up with far-reaching decisions on
the future of the party in the zone.
PDP governors give fresh conditions for
peace
PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP)
governors have given fresh conditions
for peace to return to the party and for
the chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to
remain in office.
Part of the conditions, according to
information gathered by the Saturday
Tribune, is for President Goodluck
Jonathan to prevail on Tukur to return
the structures of the party to them in
their respective states as well as make
them the leaders. Only after this would
they agree to resume adequate funding
of the party at all levels as well as its
national secretariat.
Part of Tukur’s ‘sins’ is his alleged
incessant interference in the affairs of
the state chapters, which is said to have
led to the setting up of caretaker
committees for some of the chapters.
The situation did not go down well with
the governors, who saw the action as
erosion of their powers as leaders in
their respective states.
The new development, sources close to
the governors said, followed the
intervention of some respected leaders
of the party who reportedly counseled
them on the implications of removing
Tukur now that the 2015 general
elections are around the corner.
Saturday Tribune, however, learnt that
the development had created a sharp
division among the governors, as some
of them are still insisting that the
embattled chairman must go as earlier
demanded, for them continue to be
relevant in the scheme of things in the
party ahead of the 2015 elections.
The likes of the governors of Jigawa
and Niger states, who were members of
the aggrieved G7 Governors before five
of them defected to the All Progressives
Congress (APC), and some others are
said to have insisted that for genuine
peace to return to the PDP and for the
party to maintain its supremacy come
2015 elections, there must be a
complete change of leadership.
However, one of the aides to Alhaji
Tukur revealed that the cause of friction
between Tukur and the governors was
his insistence that the party must be
returned to the grassroots, and that the
constitution of the party must be
followed to the letter to allow for due
process in election of candidates for
party or elective offices, rather than the
old order of imposition of candidates by
state governors without due process.

Kwankwaso Declares President Jonathan Incompetent
Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of
Kano, northwest Nigeria has declared
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as
incompetent and incapable to fix
challenges of development in the
country.
Kwankwaso told northern elders who
visited his office that Nigeria is drifting
towards calamity because President
Jonathan lacks the competence to
manage the affairs of the country
appropriately.
The Governor, during a meeting with
the leadership of Northern Elders
Forum at the Government House, said
despite advice and observations from
respected leaders and leaders from
within and outside the country on how
to put Nigeria on the right track, the
presidency has insensitive.
“When we met with the president, as
Northern Governors, he told us that the
former US Secretary of State, Lady
Clinton, told him that as President he
has to look at the issue of the North
very critically. She noted that there
was an imbalance in terms of
patronage, appointments and sharing
of resources.
“He assured that he was looking at
those comments and that was why he
was delaying appointments into
boards and so on. Since that meeting,
we have not seen anything or changes
so it is my conclusion that the
President lacks the capacity and
courage to do the right thing”, the
governor stated.
He lamented that the federal budget is
heavily tilted in favour of one section of
the country, pointing out that a
situation where one section of the
country is suffering from illiteracy,
underdevelopment and misery while
the other section has more than
enough is not good for national unity.
The Governor maintained that a
situation whereby a section of the
country is given priority over other
areas is not in the best interest of all,
pointing out that it is high time for the
Federal Government to be sensitive to
what is being felt by the international
community.
“We have had enough crises in this
country and it is not right to plant
seeds for crisis in the future. Look at
the North East that was allocated N2
billion in the current budget. N2 billion
is what Mr. President allocated to non-
APC states for supporting him, while
N111 billion was allocated to the South
East and South-South. This is not
close to fairness”, the governor
argued.
He, however, said that his position on
current national issues is not premised
on religion, ethnicity or sectionalism
but stems from the desire to see that
every Nigerian, irrespective where he
comes from is treated without
discrimination, Kwankwaso asserted
that it is time for members of the
National Assembly to come out and
oppose injustice that is perpetrated by
the government.
The Governor noted that what is
happening in the country in terms of
poverty, insecurity and joblessness in
the North today should not be
happening in civilized societies,
appealing to the Federal Government
to listen to the voices of reason so as
to move the country in the right
direction.
Kwankwaso also noted that the
Northern Elders Forum is one body in
the North which has continuously
expressed concern over the way
Nigeria is being run under President
Jonathan.
He pledged to continue to work with all
people of good conscience to bring
about good governance in Nigeria.
Earlier, in their separate remarks, the
chairman of the forum, Alhaji Yusuf
Maitama Sule, Danmasanin Kano and
his deputy, Wanteregh Paul Unongo
explained that they are not satisfied
with current political developments in
the country, especially as they affect
the North.
They said the visit to Kwankwaso was
to identify with his achievements and
sterling leadership qualities as well as
to look at several issues that will bring
about responsible governance, unity
and even development of the country.
